Shoelace Pose

“Each yin pose is an opportunity to crawl into ourselves and stay awhile” — Sarah Powers

gomukhasana | shoelace pose

Shoelace is a modern addition to yoga practice - one of the key poses of yin yoga which focuses on gently stressing the body’s connective tissues. It is a deep hip-opener that requires a certain level of mental focus as you play with your physical and emotional “edge.” Try this position while working on breath and awareness, understanding that many hidden emotions may be locked in this under-loved area of our body.

Shoelace is a great position in which to practice self-love. You will need to show yourself compassion and manage the reactivity you will feel pretty immediately. The pose is somewhat intense but through deep-feel, we can learn to heal.

From an easy seat, breathe in and cross your thighs. You want both of your sits bones touching down and your hips to stay as level as possible as you exhale, pulling your feet in towards your body. As much as possible, your top knee should be in line with your navel. Gently drape forward, come to your edge and find stillness. Option to remain upright and bind your arms to simultaneously open the shoulders (as seen above).

When you are ready to release the pose, roll your torso up slowly and mindfully. Sit back with your palms on the floor behind you and windshield-wiper your legs, feeling the rebounding energy in your legs and hips between each side.

Check in and see the subtle changes you have created in your mind, body + spirit.

Namaste.
